"Many a Coal Board driver found himself confronted by an army of protesting women as he tried to deposit his cargo of coal especially on washing days when freshly washed clothes festooned the washing lines strung across the back lane.  There was already enough coal dust in the air from the railway line at the end of the lane that transported coal from Whitburn Colliery to the Westoe Colliery coal washer."
